What To Watch For

Controversy over Norwood’s impending starring role. The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA condemned Norwood in September, saying the AI is “not an actor” and has “no life experience to draw from,” and was instead created based on the work of real-life actors who did not give permission. AI performers are “jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry,” the union said, expressing its opposition “to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.” The union’s statement came after a number of actors had already slammed Norwood, with actress Emily Blunt calling her creation “terrifying” and saying, “Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary.”

Key Background

Particle 6 Founder and CEO Eline van der Velden created Norwood in 2025 as the first AI “actress.” Norwood is believed to be the first in a broader stable of AI characters that Particle 6 will produce, with van der Velden announcing the creation of AI talent studio Xicoia to represent “hyperreal digital stars.” As Norwood has drawn widespread backlash from the entertainment industry, van der Velden has dismissed claims the AI is trying to steal people’s jobs, likening her to animation or puppetry and saying in a September statement Norwood “is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art.” The actress “represents experimentation, not substitution,” van der Velden said. The announcement of Norwood’s feature film comes after Particle 6 previously released a music video starring the AI in March, in which she appeared to respond to the criticism against her. “It’s the next evolution, can’t you see? AI’s not the enemy, it’s the key,” Norwood sang in the video.
