“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was expected to be a box office hit, but not quite at this scale. Marvel was coming off a string of underwhelming performances with “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts” and “The Marvels,” and projections put “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” at a roughly $189 million to $190 domestic opening which would have still been a huge success, but nowhere near what it ultimately did ($360 million). The Guardian suggested the film’s standout success means “Spider-Man” is immune to the much-talked-about “super hero slump. Holland isn’t confirmed to be reprising his role for any more solo films or wider Avengers movies as of now, but rumors persist that he’ll appear in “Avengers: Doomsday” later this year or “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027. Holland has discussed eventual plans for passing the character’s torch to another actor and said he has a “really clear vision” for the end of his time as Spider-Man, but has also said he’ll play the character for as long as the studio wants him.
