How Many Teens Use Vapes?

About 1.44 million middle school and high school aged students reported using vapes to consume tobacco in 2025, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s most recent National Youth Tobacco Survey, which was published in June. About 2 million in total said they consume any form of tobacco, meaning vapes and e-cigarettes are still the most popular method for teenagers. Among those users, one in four said they use vapes daily. An overwhelming majority of 89.4% said they use flavored vapes, with most opting for vapes with fruit, dessert or mint flavoring. However, overall tobacco consumption among adolescents has declined over the past few years, the FDA surveys have found. About 2.13 million teenagers reported using vapes in 2023, a figure that then dropped to 1.63 million in 2024, according to previous results from the National Youth Tobacco Survey—suggesting the popularity of vapes could be plateauing among young people.

The authors of the recent study at the University of Texas at El Paso also recommended further research on the topic. “Failure to identify the aggregated health risks of vaping that begins in adolescence and extends into adulthood may result in unprecedented rates of nicotine dependence, preventable death, and health care costs,” the authors of the study wrote.
