The transcript of Black\u2019s interview is likely to be released in the coming days. Comer subpoenaed Black to appear again before the committee on July 16, the lawmaker\u2019s office confirmed to Forbes, where he will once again be asked about his relationships with Epstein victims.<\/p>\n

What Did Leon Black Tell Congress?<\/h2>\n

According to published quotes from his opening statement, Black denied any impropriety in connection with Epstein, saying, \u201cI knew Jekyll. I didn\u2019t know Hyde.\u201d Black said \u201cunequivocally that I have never abused a woman,\u201d and his opening statement claims, \u201cI have never been with an underage woman. I have never engaged in sex trafficking. I have never paid Epstein for access to women\u201d and \u201cI was never blackmailed by Epstein.\u201d The billionaire cited a previous investigation that was done into his payments to Epstein, which concluded he paid $158 million to Epstein\u2014which later estimates bumped up to $170 million\u2014and those payments were for \u201chighly valuable and legitimate tax and estate planning services for my family office.\u201d The firm, Dechert, also concluded Epstein\u2019s \u201ctax work was responsible for billions of dollars in savings, and that all of Epstein\u2019s work had been vetted by reputable law and accounting firms.\u201d He pointed to Epstein\u2019s \u201cunrivaled network of relationships\u201d to justify doing business with him, also saying the financier \u201csolved a massive estate problem for me.\u201d Black claimed Epstein was dishonest in their financial arrangement, however, claiming Epstein told him his fees \u201cwere tax-deductible, \u201860-cent dollars\u2019\u201d but that was \u201cfalse,\u201d as quoted by CNBC<\/u>, which he said means \u201cwhat I believed to be $95 million of net fees paid to him over five years was actually $158 million.\u201d The billionaire said<\/u> he cut ties with Epstein in 2018 \u201cafter more than a \u200byear of increasing turmoil in our professional arrangements.\u201d Black alleged he did not know about Epstein\u2019s alleged abuse until he was indicted in 2019, and while he did business with Epstein after the financier\u2019s previous 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution, he believed it was an \u201cisolated incident\u201d and now regrets his thinking. \u201cI now know, as does the world, that Epstein was engaged in horrific, sordid activities,\u201d Black said, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal<\/u>. \u201cI feel terrible for Epstein\u2019s victims.\u201d His opening statement echoes comments Black has previously made about Epstein, claiming<\/u> in 2020 that his relationship with the late financier was a \u201chorrible mistake.\u201d <\/p>\n

What Will Lawmakers Ask Leon Black About?<\/h2>\n

Comer told reporters Friday that lawmakers had \u201chundreds and hundreds\u201d of questions for Black, including about specific bank transactions, messages, photos and communications with Epstein victims.It\u2019s unclear if those questions were asked, however, as Eldrich told reporters Friday that lawmakers had issued the subpoena over the NDAs before asking a \u201csingle question\u201d about Black and Epstein\u2019s financial transactions.<\/p>\n

What Was Epstein\u2019s Relationship With Leon Black?<\/h2>\n

Black first met Epstein in the 1990s, and the financier helped lead Black\u2019s family foundation before the billionaire hired him to be his financial advisor in 2013. The New York Times previously reported<\/u> the billionaire\u2019s services likely helped keep Epstein \u201cafloat\u201d financially after his other well-known billionaire client, Les Wexner, ended their relationship. The size of Black\u2019s fees to Epstein have long been a source of controversy given they dwarf what financial advisors would typically be paid for such services, the Times notes, and the publication reported<\/u> earlier this year on documents that suggest Epstein may also have been used to pay women on Black\u2019s behalf. (Black\u2019s attorneys told the Times that \u201cEpstein embellished, exaggerated and lied about Mr. Black\u201d and never paid any women on the billionaire\u2019s behalf.) Documents in the Epstein files suggest the two had a friendly relationship and spoke frequently, with NBC News noting<\/u> the phrase \u201cPlease call Leon Black\u201d appears in the files some 300 times. \u201cAs you are well aware, There is little I won’t do for you, or at least try to do as a friend, and a great deal that I have already done (both known [and] some things that [will need] to remain unknown),\u201d Epstein in a 2014 email. The email was addressed to Black and was emailed to the billionaire\u2019s assistant.<\/p>\n

Allegations And Litigation Against Black<\/h2>\n

Black has long denied wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, but at least three women have filed lawsuits alleging Black abused them in connection with Epstein. He has denied those allegations and only one still remains pending, after one was dismissed and the plaintiff in another case agreed to drop her lawsuit. A court also sanctioned<\/u> an attorney behind the lawsuits in April, arguing she \u201crepeatedly lied to the Court and to opposing counsel in this litigation\u201d about related litigation and falsified sonogram images related to the plaintiff\u2019s allegations. Black has also come under scrutiny in court for his relationship with Epstein, paying<\/u> the U.S. Virgin Islands $62.5 million in 2023 to avoid litigation arising from its investigation into Epstein. The billionaire narrowly avoided being deposed about Epstein earlier this year, after Epstein accusers settled<\/u> a lawsuit with Bank of America about the institution\u2019s alleged financial support to Epstein. The lawsuit mentioned payments Black made to Epstein, which plaintiffs alleged should have been flagged as suspicious. <\/p>\n
