I served at the [National Institutes of Health] for over 54 years, 38 of those as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Over that period, I proved that I believe in, and respect, the value of legitimate congressional oversight. In fact, I testified before, and\/or briefed, Senate and House committees well over 200 times over those 38 years. During and after the COVID pandemic, I have appeared multiple times for hearings in the Senate and the House, usually under oath, and sat for several days-long transcribed sworn interviews, answering questions about the very issues that are now the subject of this hearing. However, given Sen. Paul\u2019s obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution, his repeated slanderous comments about me, and recently, his publicly releasing my unredacted personal diary, aimed at embarrassing and intimidating me, the only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, quote, behind bars, unquote. Any reasonable person who has followed his unhinged obsession with me would readily come to the same conclusion. Therefore, although it pains me to do so, because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government, and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress, under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions. President Donald Trump criticized Fauci\u2019s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in a post<\/u> on Truth Social, minutes before he began testifying. He said Fauci\u2019s \u201cideas were CRAZY,\u201d claiming he \u201coverrode\u201d Fauci on Operation Warp Speed, the plan to develop COVID-19 vaccines. He also alleged Fauci \u201cstrongly disagreed\u201d with the theory the virus came from a lab in Wuhan, claiming Fauci was \u201calways trying to protect China.\u201d Trump said he \u201crelied less and less\u201d on Fauci over time, saying he made \u201ctoo many bad calls, like on MASKS,\u201d accusing Fauci of being an anti-masker before becoming a \u201csuper-masker.\u201d Trump claimed he warned Biden that Fauci \u201cwas no good, either didn\u2019t have a clue, or was dishonest,\u201d but said Biden gave him \u201cvast destructive power.\u201d Some of Fauci\u2019s diary entries were fiercely critical of Trump, whom Fauci described in some entries as \u201cout of control,\u201d \u201ca total embarrassment\u201d and \u201cincorrigible.\u201d<\/p>\n
