The reason behind Thursday\u2019s sudden surge is unclear, but on Wednesday, an influx of migrants had attempted to cross the Spanish border by swimming, the Associated Press reported. Opposition party politicians in Spain and Europe pointed to S\u00e1nchez\u2019s pro-immigration stances as the reason for the surge, referencing a policy<\/u> his government implemented earlier this year that would give about half a million undocumented immigrants legal status in Spain. <\/p>\n

Videos of large numbers of migrants appearing to cross the Spanish border into Ceuta went widely viral on social media Thursday, frequently circulated by right-wing commentators who are critical of immigration. Billionaire Elon Musk said<\/u> on Thursday afternoon the migration surge is \u201cabsolutely an invasion,\u201d and he reposted a tweet<\/u> from commentator and Canadian marketing professor Gad Saad that accused Western politicians of being \u201ctreasonous\u201d with \u201ccastrated, weak, lobotomized ideologues.\u201d A video posted<\/u> to X by Santiago Abascal, leader of Spain\u2019s far-right Vox party, also called the influx of migrants an \u201cinvasion\u201d and accused \u201cS\u00e1nchez’s corrupt government\u201d of \u201cdesperately calling in more hitmen to stay in power.\u201d Abascal\u2019s video garnered more than 2.2 million views as of Thursday afternoon. Abascal posted another video<\/u> Thursday morning, garnering 2.6 million views, accusing S\u00e1nchez of being a \u201ctraitor, a corrupt man, and an indecent person,\u201d calling for his ouster. <\/p>\n
