The reason behind Thursday\u2019s sudden surge is unclear, but on Wednesday, an influx of migrants had attempted to cross the Spanish border by swimming, the Associated Press reported. Opposition party politicians in Spain and Europe pointed to S\u00e1nchez\u2019s pro-immigration stances as the reason for the surge, referencing a policy<\/u> his government implemented earlier this year that would give about half a million undocumented immigrants legal status in Spain. <\/p>\n

Videos of large numbers of migrants appearing to cross the Spanish border into Ceuta went widely viral on social media Thursday, frequently circulated by right-wing commentators who are critical of immigration. Billionaire Elon Musk said<\/u> on Thursday afternoon the migration surge is \u201cabsolutely an invasion,\u201d among several posts he made on the situation in Ceuta. He later shared a video purportedly showing the migrant surge while adding<\/u> the comment \u201cLooks like World War Z!\u201d after posting<\/u>, \u201cSpain\u2019s entire budget will be destroyed by illegal migrants.\u201d A video posted<\/u> to X by Santiago Abascal, leader of Spain\u2019s far-right Vox party, also called the influx of migrants an \u201cinvasion\u201d and accused \u201cS\u00e1nchez’s corrupt government\u201d of \u201cdesperately calling in more hitmen to stay in power.\u201d Abascal\u2019s video garnered more than 2.2 million views as of Thursday afternoon.
